Outdoor Winter Dog Care Guide for Nordic Climates

    9 min read

Caring for a dog through a Nordic winter is a different challenge from milder climates. Sub-zero temperatures, snow, salted roads and short daylight hours all add up. Here's a complete guide to keeping outdoor and indoor-outdoor dogs healthy from November to March.

    Shelter and warmth

An insulated dog house raised off the ground, with straw bedding and a wind-baffled entrance, is the baseline. Position it out of the prevailing wind direction. For very cold nights or short-haired breeds, dogs should come inside.

    Calorie needs go up

Outdoor dogs in Nordic winters can need 20–40% more calories. Increase food portions gradually as temperatures drop, and consider adding healthy fats. Senior dogs and short-haired breeds need extra attention.

    Reliable liquid water

This is the most-overlooked piece. A heated dog water bowl with a thermostat is essential outdoor equipment in any climate where temperatures regularly fall below −5 °C. It uses very little electricity and removes the dehydration risk completely.

    Paw care

    • Rinse paws after walks on salted roads — salt burns pads.
    • Trim fur between toes to prevent ice ball formation.
    • Consider paw balm or dog boots for long walks below −15 °C.
    • Check between toes daily for cracks or redness.

    Cold-weather red flags

    • Lifting paws repeatedly or refusing to walk — too cold.
    • Shivering, slow movement, looking for shelter — bring inside.
    • Pale gums or sluggish behaviour — possible hypothermia, vet immediately.

    Daylight and exercise

Short Nordic winter days mean walks often happen in the dark. Use a reflective harness or LED collar, and stick to known routes. Brief, high-energy outdoor sessions work better than long slow walks in extreme cold.
